Happy Diwali and New Year to Everyone.

Today we are also recognising Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut which literally means mountain of food.  This relates to the story of Krishna saving the residents of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra who was punishing the villagers with continuous torrential rain.  Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill to shelter the residents and ultimately Indra bowed to the power of Lord Krishna.  All the villagers thanked Krishna by offering him different varieties of food and these all formed the shape of the mountain.

It is indeed the first point on the 9 point of Code of Conduct laid down by Him for every devotee to follow. He says  that meditation is  the very basis of all spiritual practices and that the path of meditation will destroy ignorance  and will grant the individual union with God!

Brother James Kon, Deputy Vice President of Spiritual Wing,  SSIO Malaysia, will be facilitating the workshop. Brother  James Kon has been practising meditation for more than 40 years, and in 1988 came under the divine guidance of Swami.  He was inspired by Swami to write a Programme on Meditation and share it with all.

Thought for the Day

“The culture of Bharat believes in unity in diversity, which is true wisdom. Many intellectuals observe multiplicity or plurality in unity, but there are very few men of wisdom who observe unity in diversity. Since ancient days, the inhabitants of this holy land have been practicing these principles and have been sharing them with the rest of the world. This country has always prayed for the advancement and welfare of the whole world. That is the meaning of the Vedic dictum, Loka samastha sukhino bhavantu (May the whole world be happy!) Our prayer is not limited to Bharat only. We pray for the welfare of the whole world.”

Thought for the Day

Saturday 28th January is the Chinese New Year.  Here are some of Swami’s words from when the Asian devotees celebrated Chinese New Year in Prashanti Nilayam in 1997.

Today the Chinese devotees are observing their national New Year Day here. What is the origin of the word "China"? It is derived from the two words "chung" and "kuo". 'Chung" means the human heart. "Kuo" refers to the country. The word "China" therefore means that "My heart is my country". This concept is applicable to all countries and all religions. For instance, Bhaaratha. It is derived from, the two words- "Bhaa" meaning "effulgence" and "Ratha" meaning "to rejoice". The heart is the source of effulgence. Bhaaratheeya is one who rejoices in the effulgence emanating from the heart. Every man is attracted to the heart. God is not confined to any particular place. His mal abode is the heart. The Chinese have esteemed the heart as their native land. the heart is subject to troubles and difficulties. From ancient times and to some extent even to-day, the Chinese have observed one ritual every morning before beginning their day's chores. They declare: “Difficulties are our friends. Let us invite them." The Chinese have looked upon difficulties as their friends. They have recognised that without trouble no good can be realised. They used to start the day's work with this thought before them. The Chinese also realised that true happiness comes from the satisfaction of a task well done. In Bhaarath also there is the dictum, "Uddhareth Aathmanaaaathmaanam" (Raise the Self by the Self). What is it that can raise the Self? It is our own good conduct. Our good conduct is not for elevating the country, but for elevating ourselves. A whetstone is used for sharpening a knife, not for making the whetstone smoother. Likewise, in this world, your good conduct improves you and, as a result the world.

Thought for the Day

“Today the Sun-God begins his northward journey, the auspicious Uttarayana. Let this Sankranthi bring about a change in your attitude, so you sanctify your life. Ability to Change (Kraanthi) and Peace (Shanthi) both reside within your heart. Do not search for them in the outside world. Discover them within. Today is another pointer to the path to realise God. The Sun is the supreme example of selfless and tireless service. Life on earth is possible only because of the Sun. The Sun teaches everyone the lesson of humble devotion to duty, without any conceit. Sun God is a shining example and reminder for everyone that they should do their duty with devotion and dedication. Selflessly doing one's duty is the greatest Yoga, says Lord Krishna in the Gita. Serve your parents and society, and lead a godly life! Hence let your actions and thoughts be good. You will certainly experience the Bliss Divine.”
